Victim of up-skirt photo shoots back

According to the AP, Police arrested a man accused of taking a cell phone picture under a subway rider’s skirt after the victim said she used her own phone to snap back. The 28-year-old woman said she was victimized last month while climbing stairs to an elevated station in upper Manhattan. A passer-by confirmed her suspicion that he had taken a photo up her skirt, she said.

She followed the suspect onto a train, took his picture, then e-mailed it to police and filed a report. “I told him ‘smile’ because I am going to the police,” the woman told The New York Times.

Aaron Olivieri was arrested Tuesday on misdemeanor charges of attempted unlawful surveillance, attempted sexual abuse and harassment. He was nabbed in a Manhattan subway station by an officer who said he matched the person in the photo the woman had taken, authorities said.

Another travel company goes under

The Associated Press is reporting that a second British vacation company has gone bust, the same week the country’s third-largest tour operator collapsed. XL Leisure Group PLC went into liquidation on Friday, leaving some 50,000 of its customers stranded abroad. About 400 people with reservations would have their vacations canceled and receive full refunds.Two weeks ago, the Canada-based budget carrier Zoom, which offered service to Britain, shut down. Silverjet, a business-class carrier based at Luton north of London, ceased operations in June.

Thailand lifts emergency

Associated Press:

The Thai government ended a state of emergency imposed in the capital to control a violent political crisis, saying on Sunday it had only served to scare away tourists crucial to the country’s economy.
Emergency rule was imposed by the government on Sept. 2 after a night of violent clashes between anti-government supporters and opponents left one man dead and dozens injured.
Images of the mayhem were broadcast around the world, prompting travel advisories from several countries.
Calm was quickly restored and business and daily life continued as normal in the Thai capital. The army refused to exercise its authority under the decree to oust tens of thousands of protesters from the prime minister’s compound, where they have been camped in tents since Aug. 26.
